Woman Hits Light Pole In Front Of Fire Station

Last updated on Friday, February 29, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Bedford firefighters at the North End Fire Station on Lincoln Avenue got a bit of a rude awakening last night.

A Bedford police report says shortly after 9:30 at night, firefighters heard a loud crash right outside the station, but didn't hear any skidding tires.

When firemen got outside to see what happened, right across the street from their garage at 5th and Lincoln Streets, they found a purple Pontiac Sunfire crashed into a light pole.

According to the report, 29-year-old Alisha Kernan of Bedford was heading into town after, as she told responders, she had taken both Xanax and Klonopin.

She told firemen she had no idea what happened, and nobody could find any sign of brakes having been applied. Kernan wasn't injured, but she was arrested.

Xanax is often used as a recreational drug and the Klonopin, which is a brand name for clonazepam, is often used in combination with drugs like Xanax to either enhance the euphoric feeling or to curb some of the negative side effects.

Kernan was taken to Lawrence County jail charged with operating while intoxicated and driving while suspended with a prior.
