Two Killed Near Martinsville Including Veteran Firefighter

Last updated on Tuesday, February 5, 2008

(MARTINSVILLE) - A head-on accident near Martinsville involving an ambulance killed two people yesterday afternoon.

State Police Putnamville reports 40-year-old Captain David Sherfick, a 17-year veteran of the Brown Township Fire Department, was driving his ambulance west on IN-144 east of Mann coming back from a patient transport when 45-year-old James Hoskins of Nashville, coming the other way, reportedly crossed the centerline crashing into the ambulance head on.

Captain Sherfick and James Hoskins were pronounced dead at the scene by the Morgan County Coroner.

Sherfick's assistant, 22-year-old Reserve Firefighter Evan Kerkhof, survived and was conscious and was taken to Methodist Hospital.

State police are still investigating the incident, however they have so far ruled out weather and alcohol as contributing factors.
