(NEW YORK) - A photograph has surfaced of famed World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle taken shortly after his death from a Japanese bullet on a small pacific island.

As far as can be determined, the photograph has never been published. It surfaced 63 years after his death, surprising historians.

Pyle grew up on a farm in Western Indiana.

Pyle trained as a journalist at Indiana University Bloomington.

A print of the photo has been in the possession of a retired naval officer from Goshen since a few months after Pyle's death in 1945.
