(LUBBOCK, TX) - Legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight has turned in his whistle and headed for retirement from his coaching job at Texas Tech yesterday.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports the move was unexpected as the winningest coach in college basketball history walked away in the middle of his 7th season in Lubbock, and his 43rd year as a Division 1 basketball coach.
Knight started his coaching career coaching Army when he was only 24 years old, and gained fame for his take-no-prisoners approach to basketball in Bloomington, leading the Hoosiers to the only undefeated season in NCAA men's basketball history in 1976.
Knight is leaving his coaching duties to his son and heir-apparent Pat Knight. Knight told the Avalanche-Journal that he finally decided to make his exit by the end of this season, but was split on how best to set the Red Raiders up to continue on in his absence.
He reportedly decided the best move would be to let his son Pat coach the remaining 10 games of the regular season since so many of the players this year will be returning next year.
At the very least, Knight goes out on a high, winning his final game. The Red Raiders put up 67 to the Oklahoma State Cowboys' 60.
