(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University is presenting what they are calling a “jazzy” version of “Le Nozze di Figaro,” the second part of one of the most famous operas in history.
"Le Nozze di Figaro," written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Pierre Beaumarchais, follows the more commonly known first part of the trilogy, "the Barber of Seville," in the "Marriage of Figaro" opera trilogy, made famous in part for its role in various Looney Toons shorts.
The "jazzy" part comes in to this particular production, however, in the way conductor William Crutchfield is presenting it.
The "Bel Canto" style, as it's called, is an 18th century method which focuses more on the personal style and tone of the individual singer's voice, with improvised ornamentation, than it does on whether or not the part is sung "correctly," so to speak.
The opera will be sung in the traditional Italian with English subtitles, curtain goes up at 8:00pm February 22nd at the University Opera Theater.
