County Party Donation System Even Raises Eyebrows In Chicago

Last updated on Friday, February 29, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County’s political donation system is garnering media attention from far outside the area, and it’s even raising eyebrows in the home of the political machine, Chicago, Illinois, getting press in the Chicago Sun-Times.

The political patronage system, as it exists here, died even in the stereotypically corrupt world of local politics in Chicago decades ago.

But Lawrence County is still one of a few counties, both state and nationwide, that allow workers to have contributions taken out of paychecks directly.

Lawrence County Republican Party Chairman Dan Bortner says there's no pressure to make payroll donations, and he feels it causes no harm.

Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis, however, recently make a public statement that she wants to see that practice end in City Hall.

Either way, with a number of county council seats being contested here in Lawrence County this year, expect this to be an issue among the candidates.
