Board Of Trustees Announces Big Plans For IU

Last updated on Friday, February 1, 2008

(RICHMOND) - The Indiana University Board of Trustees concluded their meeting at the IU East campus in Richmond yesterday, and have announced a number of big plans for Bloomington, and the rest of the IU system.

To start, construction on a new apartment-style housing complex will begin at the end of this summer in an area west of Union and between 3rd and 10th. The proposed 803-bed Ashton student housing complex is due to be complete by the fall semester of 2010.

Another project will be the subdivision of the old Showers Furniture site near downtown Bloomington to be offered to developers on long-term leases for commercial and residential-retail projects. Those proceeds are aimed toward becoming a new revenue source for IU.

Finally, the trustees signed on the man responsible for how all this is supposed to look. Nationally renowned architect David King, who is with SmithGroup-JJR in Washington, D.C., will spend the next 11 months masterminding projects for Bloomington and IUPUI.

In 2009 he will start work on Gary, Kokomo, New Albany, Richmond and South Bend.

One of King's most notable accomplishments has been, strangely enough, the world headquarters of Visteon Corporation.
