(UNDATED) - The local Red Cross says the area's blood supply is starting the new year with a "nearly-safe" classification.
Today's overall blood level is at 3.11 days; just over a three-day's supply. A safe level is considered a four-day supply.
Encouraging also is that the inventory for type O-negative blood, the so-called universal blood, is showing a nearly one and a half-day supply, the best level it has been in several months.
Red Cross officials say the recent Donorama, while falling just short of hoped-for goals, helped to push the supply into a steadier-operating level - at least temporarily.
