GE To Close Bloomington Doors In 2009

Last updated on Friday, January 18, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON) - More sad area economic news came yesterday afternoon.

General Electric is closing its Bloomington refrigerator plant by late next year.

The nearly 900 employees that make side-by-side refrigerators in the campus town will be out of work before the end of 2009, only adding to the area's economic woes.

GE officials say the Bloomington facility lost $45 million last year and is looking to lose the same through this year.

The plant, which employed as many as 3,200 workers before the end of the millennium, will only add to the list of empty industrial real estate in Bloomington, after the closings of RCA and Westinghouse, not to mention the problems you add in when you add Bedford to the equation with Visteon being mothballed before the end of this summer and its nearly 700 workers going home, and Bedford's GM plant having a cloud hanging over its head due to announcements made after the last strike negotiations.

Where the manufacturing capacity will transfer to when the Ge plant closes its doors, however, has not been released.
