(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Mitch Daniels made his State of the State address last night focusing on his plans to fix property taxes, and touting his accomplishments in streamlining other parts of government.
He started off saying the size of Indiana's government has been reduced by 4,000 people, and touted other improvements from child support to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, saying if Hoosiers can fix the BMV, they "can fix anything."
Daniels took on a couple other items before getting to the crux of his address, property taxes and local government reform.
Daniels said business as usual will have to end since, as he says, business as usual leads to higher taxes and more spending.
Daniels tax proposal involves significantly lowering property taxes, and raising sales tax by a penny.
However, despite concerns, Daniels says overall tax responsibilities for Hoosiers will decrease. Daniels says, by the time everything is put together, Hoosiers should see $2.00 in tax cuts for every dollar their sales tax increases.
Bedford State Senator Brent Steele says Daniels' address should help build support for a tax reform package, but that the State Senate, at least, is considering several options to see which one will fit best.
