(BEDFORD) - National Weather Service meteorologists haven’t given us any change in news for this evening’s winter storms.
The winter storm warning goes into effect this evening at 7:00pm, and will last until 7:00pm tomorrow night.
A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected and possibly high winds. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible. In fact, Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says stay home if you can.
The "suggestion from our department, if it does get as bad as they're anticipating, would be to not get out unless you absolutely have to," says Parsley. "If you do have to, if we do have ice under the snow, that's going to give a possible false sense of traction... So maintain normal distance in front of you times two is a good rule of thumb. Just try to keep double the distance away from the vehicles realizing you're going to have to take longer to stop."
Parsley also says that if you must go out, go prepared with sandbags in the back of your vehicle and other emergency items like a small shovel.
And if you do get stuck, use your engine and heater sparingly to maintain the temperature in the car, crack at least one window for fresh ventilation, and make sure your tailpipe is clear of snow and other obstructions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Meterologists are still predicting between 3 and 5 inches of snow on top of ice between a quarter and half inch thick.
