BPD Officer Hit In Face Unprovoked

Last updated on Tuesday, January 22, 2008

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford police officer took an unprovoked shot to the chin trying to help a man outside the old Wal-Mart building last night.

Bedford police say an officer spotted 25-year-old Brian Stewart near the old Wal-Mart and, when the man spotted the police cruiser, allegedly started yelling and hollering at the officers.

The officers stopped and got out to approach the man and see if they could help them.

Shortly after, Stewart allegedly appeared to reach for his pocket after saying things the officers didn't quite understand, and then swung and hit one officer in the face with his fist.

Officers would eventually get control of the man after a scuffle, and take him to Dunn Memorial Hospital to have him looked at, and then to the Lawrence County jail.

The officer who was struck suffered only a cut to his lip.

Bedford police did say, however, there may be mitigating medical circumstances to the incident.
