(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington police officer was severely beaten over the weekend trying to apprehend an allegedly intoxicated man.

According to Bloomington police officials, 25-year-old Officer Jeff Rodgers found and approached a man near the 37 interchange on North Walnut.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Jason Nichols, was reportedly standing in the middle of the roadway, and when Rodgers approached him and asked him questions, Nichols reportedly became argumentative.

When the officer tried to prevent Nichols from walking into oncoming traffic, Nichols allegedly began striking the officer in the face multiple times with brass knuckles. A long struggle would ensue.

Eventually, with backup, Nichols, who apparently was also being sought by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department for beating his girlfriend with brass knuckles, would be taken in.

Nichols was taken to Monroe County jail preliminarily charged with battery with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest resulting in serious bodily injury, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Officer Rodgers was taken to Bloomington Hospital with several lacerations and broken teeth, and was treated and released.
