(BEDFORD) - Last night’s severe thunderstorms caused the National Weather Service in Indianapolis to call flood warnings for most of the WBIW listening area carrying on through 7:00am this morning.
Most of the warnings cover streams and rivers in the area. Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Lawrence, Monroe, Jennings and parts of southeastern Greene County were placed under flash flood warnings through this morning.
The National Weather Service says those living near a creek, stream or other body of water should keep an eye out on water levels, and those driving along area roads should also take caution.
When flood warnings are issued, and even afterwards when water is left standing, Indiana State Police officials recommend avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary, don't cross or circumvent barricades at water crossings, and be especially vigilant when it's dark out.
The State Police says most related drownings occur at night when it is difficult to see water crossings. They also remind drivers that you should never cross flowing water as it may cause you to lose control and to dry your brakes occasionally by lightly tapping them.
Finally, 6 inches of water is all it takes to reach the bottom of most cars, a foot can float most cars, and 2 feet can easily carry them away. So be careful.
