(UNDATED) - Floods, fire trucks and the beginning of the local election season was the big news of January this year in the Bedford area.
Political Season Begins
January started out with politics when, just two days after New Years, Jean Williams, wife of long-time former mayor John Williams, declared she would challenge incumbent Joe Klumpp in the Republican primaries for the spot as mayor of Bedford.
She would go on to fight one of the more bitter and controversial elections in Bedford's history, and see successes that would ultimately make her a big political target.
Shortly after, however, long-time John Williams political rival Sam Shaw would declare his own candidacy.
Rain, Rain, Go Away
The middle of January would see heavy rains damage the city and surrounding areas, closing down roads and putting people in danger.
The most treacherous area seemed to be along the east fork of the White River where water levels crested the bridge. Several people would try to cross flooded roads, only to find themselves in deeper than they expected.
New Big Rig For Fire Department
January ended on an uptick, though, when the Bedford fire department would announce the purchase of a brand new, state-of-the-art hook and ladder truck which would cost near $1-million dollars, and would get the chance to stand on display in Indianapolis for a while before arriving in Bedford.
The department would take delivery of the new truck in April, and it would be just over a month before they tore it up.
At the end of May, the truck took on some minor cosmetic damage when trying to avoid a head on collision with a Mustang that crossed the center line of Tunnelton Road.
