(UNDATED) - August 2007 was a month of big news in the Bedford area.

Plane Goes Down Near Bloomington

The month started off with a plane going down south of Monroe County Airport. The plane came to a stop upside down in a cornfield near Bloomington after its pilot, Justin Boren of Martinsville, tried to put it down in an emergency after noticing a malfunction in one of the instruments.

Boren was taking the aircraft on a test flight after performing maintenance, and was able to walk away from the crash without major injuries.

WBIW's Bud Johnson Dies

Bedford radio lost one of its very own when Charles "Bud" Johnson passed away toward the middle of the month.

Johnson was one of the original employees of Bedford's WBIW radio, and wore many hats in the community after that. 'Nuff said.

New Heltonville School Opens

The town of Heltonville opened doors to a brand new school toward the end of august.

Doctor Suellen Reed and Pricipal Doug Martin cut the ribbon inaugurating the grand opening of the brand new Heltonville Elementary School.

Bloomfield Schools Receive Bomb Threats

The schools in Bloomfield received 2 bomb threats in a matter of 2 weeks, shutting down the school.

Department of Defense bomb squads from crane would case the schools but would find nothing. School and law enforcement officials would catch the culprits before long.

Hembree Faces Charges After Daughter's Death

And the trial of James "Jay" Hembree got underway on the 21st for the death of his 6 month old daughter Lexi in 2005. Hembree faced between 20 and 50 years behind bars on charges of battery resulting in death.

The trial caught brought attention on the small town of Orleans, and developed much controversy when, in early September, Hembree would be acquitted and set free.
