Bedford General Motors Workers On Strike
The story that would have people in Bedford on edge for the rest of the month of September would be the nationwide General Motors strike which included in the Powertrain plant in Bedford.
More than 500 workers at GM Powertrain would join 73,000 GM workers nationwide and take to the picket lines September 24th in the first major national strike of a U.S. automaker in decades.
UAW Local 440 President Darrell Thimling would be on call 24/7 while the strike was on, waiting for word from Detroit that everyone could go back to work.
On the morning of September 26th, Thimling would be told a tentative agreement had been reached, but union members would be told to remain on the picket lines until the agreement solidified.
Later that day, that call would come, and GM workers in Bedford would get back to work starting with 2nd shift.
