(CHARLESTOWN) - Police in Charlestown, Indiana may be embarrassed to find their short one inmate at Clark County jail. Why embarrassed? He allegedly escaped by causing a distraction while on work release at a Fraternal Order of Police lodge.
Police say 24-year-old Wayne Mitchell was with the rest of his fellow inmates stopping to eat lunch at a Fraternal Order of Police lodge when he said he needed to use the restroom.
Mitchell allegedly clogged the toilet and came out saying he needed to go to the police van to get some towels to help clean up the mess.
The rest of the inmates were sent in to help clean up as well, and, on his way to get towels from the van, Mitchell walked to a nearby car dealership and expressed interest in checking out a red Chevy Camaro convertible.
The dealership employee handed him the keys for a test drive, and that was the last they saw of both Mitchell and the Camaro.
Officers later found Mitchell's jail-issue clothing at the dealership.
