(BLOOMINGTON) - The decision of a mother to hand over her infant at a Bloomington hospital is being praised by child advocates.

The woman left the newborn with the staff at Monroe Hospital on Thursday -- and could do so without any questions under the state's Safe Haven Law. The child was soon transferred to Bloomington Hospital and has since been placed with a foster family.

Bloomington Hospital social worker Mavis Anderson says the law was enacted to help avoid instances when women abandon children.

Anderson says the woman in Bloomington did exactly as she should have by taking the baby to a safe location such as a hospital emergency room or police or fire station.

She says if the child appears uninjured, emergency officials will take it with no questions asked.
