Williams Takes Shot At Local Newspaper

Last updated on Thursday, November 8, 2007

(BEDFORD) - Republican mayoral candidate Jean Williams took a snipe at the Bedford Times-Mail for their endorsing independent candidate, and ultimate election winner, Shawna M. Girgis.

At her event Tuesday night, she thanked all those who had volunteered and worked for her campaign, but then encouraged those in attendance to cancel their paper subscriptions. Some of Williams' final remarks were, "My parting words would be to consider dropping your subscription with the Times-Mail..."

She asserted the paper insulted people's intelligence, and that hitting them in the pocketbook might encourage them to reconsider their effort.

The Times-Mail, in an October 31st column, endorsed Girgis's mayoral effort.

Though the endorsement of candidates by newspapers in common practice elsewhere for decades, the Times-Mail has only done it through the past 2 election cycles, causing controversy in Bedford.
