Prosecutor's Office Torched, Stolen From

Last updated on Monday, November 12, 2007

(SHOALS) - The Martin County prosecutor’s office in Shoals was set ablaze Saturday night by a man who apparently had designs on stealing from the office.

State police in Jasper say 2 juveniles were walking past the office on Elm Street when they saw smoke coming from the building and a man inside.

The kids ran across the street to the Martin County sheriff's office and informed the town marshal. When the marshal arrived, the building was cooking and the man was gone.

After the Shoals Fire Department put the fire out, investigators found several as-of-yet unidentified items were stolen.

The identity of the stolen items is being withheld pending the outcome of the arson and theft investigations, however, yesterday afternoon, state police Jasper arrested 26-year-old Cary Lee Clifton for possessing stolen items from the prosecutor's office.

Clifton is being held in Martin County jail without bond.
