Girgis, Terrell Win; Other Lawrence County Results

Last updated on Wednesday, November 7, 2007

(BEDFORD) - The Cities of Bedford and Mitchell have new mayors elect set to take over running the municipalities in January.

Independent candidate, now Independent mayor elect, Shawna Girgis, gave a serious shellacking to her Republican and Democratic opponents, long time Bedford politico Jean Williams, and first-timer Alan "Big Al" Craig. Girgis more than doubled the as-of-yet unofficial vote tally of Williams, and got more than 10 times the votes of Craig.

In Mitchell, mayoral incumbent Morris "Butch" Chastain was unseated by Republican challenger Dan Terrell in a race that was at least closer than the Bedford race, but still decisive.

In the only other contested race in the City of Bedford, Democratic Councilman Patrick W. Robbins held on to his seat against the challenge of Republican Ken Brumbaugh by another significant margin.

The only other change in position in the City of Bedford is the city Clerk-Treasurer's office which, though uncontested in the general election, did change hands during the primary this year as Julie Blackwell Chase defeated Donna Brumbaugh.

The Clerk-Treasurer's seat in Mitchell changed hands as Republican George C. James defeated Democrat Mark H. Kern.

Republican Dwight Moore will remain as Mitchell City Councilman at Large. District 1 in Mitchell will be represented by Democrat Rosemary Brewer, District 2 will continue to be represented by Democrat Bill Arnold, though District 3 changed hands, with Democrat Joey D. Slone losing out to Republican Michael E. Eager, and District 4 will remain represented by Democrat Everett Ferrel.

In the only contested race in the Town of Oolitic, the 2 Town Council at Large seats will go to Republicans Glenn Gross and Steve Louden, who defeated Democrat Dana L. Pruett. See all polling numbers here.
