(UNDATED) - With the fall fowl hunting and fishing seasons upon us, Indiana conservation officers are warning anglers and hunters to wear proper flotation devices when on or near the water.
This concern arises after a Hammond, Indiana man suffered a heart attack after falling into Lake Michigan while trying to secure his boat.
Officer John Salb says many people think they can swim well enough or can otherwise get out of the water easily enough, however, Salb says the ability to perform even the simplest of tasks after an unexpected fall into 30 or 40 degree water is exceptionally dimished.
Salb recommends getting a Coast Guard-approved inflatable life vest or, for those who want to have their protection from the cold and float too, you can get a float coat.
Prices for inflatable vests start around $50 and float coats can start around $150.
