Will GM Stay In Bedford? Reply Hazy

Last updated on Monday, October 8, 2007

(DETROIT) - As further details of the tentative labor agreement between GM and the United Auto Workers emerge, the future of the Bedford Powertrain plant looks a little less glossy.

According to an Associated Press report, 15 plants nationwide have been given different future terms, ranging from, "demand and business case dependent," "no future product allocation," and "possible sale or closure."

On the list of 15 question-marked factories are plants in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, and the Powertrain plant here in Bedford. No information was available at press time as to which classification the Bedford plant was listed.

The AP says the contract summary provided to local union officials said only 3 plants, in St. Louis, Livonia, Michigan and Massena, New York, were on the chopping block before the 2011 contract expiration date.

The 15 other plants are safe until then, however, the AP speculates GM could use those plants, including Bedford, as bargaining chips for the next round of labor negotiations.
