Lehigh Cement announced its expansion plans in Mitchell, IN shortly after noon on Friday.
First, however, Lehigh's Dan Harrington had to figure out how to refer to the project.
The project has been referred to thus far as "Project Phantom," named partially after the Mitchell plant manager's service flying F-4 Phantoms in Vietnam. However, they settled on a more simple moniker "Mitchell Expansion Project."
Harrington explained the State of Indiana will see around $129 million in increased output during the construction, and Lehigh will employ around 2,630 people to build the facility valued at more than $400 million. Harrington says the total result in Indiana will be an increase of $226 million in ongoing operations.
Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman said she is proud of the expansion, especially since she sees "Hoosier cement" going into the construction of the Lucas Oil Stadium for the Indianapolis Colts. She says she drives by it to work every day.
The plant expansion is expected to be completed by 2012.
