(BEDFORD) - GM Powertrain in Bedford has announced their clean up of hazardous PCBs is proceeding on schedule.
During a meeting Thursday evening, program manager Ed Peterson said clean up of an area along Pleasant Run Creek and the Bailey Scales Branch should be completed by end of this year.
GM also plans to include 40 acres of wetlands around Bud Ikerd road and Peerless Road to their project, but is looking for an organization to partner with to help transform the area.
PCBs, known by their chemical name as polychlorinated biphenyls, have been shown in studies to cause skin rashes in humans and may cause liver failure according to the Environmental Health Perspective, and causes a number of problems, some deadly, in animals that consume certain quantities of the dioxin-like chemicals.
