(BLOOMINGTON) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported a rise in crime in Bloomington and Monroe County.

The FBI says both violent crime and property crime have gone up in the campus town and surrounding county, but officials from Monroe County and the campus police force say that doesn't mean Bloomington is becoming more dangerous.

They state possible reasons for the rise could be anywhere from more crimes being actually reported, to the economy taking a downward turn. From 2005 to 2006, county reports of aggravated assaults went up by 13, while in the City of Bloomington, reports went up by more than 50.

However, Indiana University police has reported a slight decrease in reports of forcible rape and assaults on campus.
