(FRENCH LICK) - Orange County authorities have noticed a dramatic increase over the last year in the theft of copper.
Sheriff's department spokesman Bill Fullington says they have been responding to calls of copper thefts from business and residences. Homes under construction and vacant homes are the easiest targets for thieves. He says thieves have also been stealing wire from utility companies and construction companies.
Fullington noted that there's been a huge increase in the demand for copper worldwide, which is driving costs up. He says its easy money for the thieves.
However, recent changes to the law now forces sellers to provide their name when selling scrap metal. Fullington says area recyclers have been cooperating by providing that information to police.
Several suspects have been arrested in recent months for theft of copper and other scrap metals.
