Bloomington Police Identify Man In Shooting Standoff

Last updated on Tuesday, October 16, 2007

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police have identified the man accused of discharging an assault rifle from his 2nd story apartment balcony.

Bloomington police Captain Joe Qualters says 27-year-old Jesse Sneed, who is registered as an Indiana University student, is the man they allege fired several multi-round bursts from an assault rifle at Arch Haven Apartments near 2nd Street.

Police had the area around the apartment secured for more than 4 hours this morning as they tried to determine if the gunman was still in the apartment and dangerous.

Police say they arrested Sneed as he was exiting the apartment around 8:30 in the morning. Arresting officers suspect Sneed was intoxicated, but that has not yet been confirmed. Around 11:30, Captain Qualters acknowledged the man they arrested was the alleged shooter they were looking for.

When police entered Sneed's apartment, they didn't find any sort of weaponry beyond a few loaded magazines, however, when the critical incident response team inspected the roof of the building, they found the assault rifles in question, an AR-15 and an AK-47.

Sneed stands charged with criminal recklessness with a weapon.

The sounds heard by residents, and by first responding officers, were referred to as being bursts of multiple shots, indicating the rifle, or rifles, may have been in full automatic mode when discharged.

Since Indiana University acknowledges Sneed as a current student in the School of Law, that would indicate Sneed has no prior criminal record.
