(BLOOMINGTON) - Two Bloomington residents, including one IU employee, were arrested last night for impersonating Indiana University Police Department officers.

Bloomington police say 21-year-old Christopher Marshall and Kyle Coppinger, an IU Residential Programs and Services employee, drove a red Dodge Intrepid around campus trying to pull people over, actually confronting at least 2 IU students.

One, a 21-year-old woman, was having trouble parallel parking her car, so she put her hazards on and called her boyfriend for help. Coppinger and Marshall allegedly pulled up behind her, approached the window, produced an IUPD business card and asked her for her license and registration.

Reports say Coppinger returned to his vehicle and Marshall approached the woman's car, then the boyfriend came out to help the woman, as Coppinger was allegedly beating on her window threatening a parking ticket.

The boyfriend approached the 2 suspects, who then threw the ID cards at him, and took off.

Bloomington police were notified and eventually made contact with the suspects in a parking lot near 4th and Dunn Streets.

The victims identified Coppinger and Marshall as the culprits and they were arrested and charged with confinement and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Bloomington's Sergeant Jeff Canada says if an officer pulls you over, it will be with flashing lights, not by randomly approaching the vehicle, and the officer will present a badge and ID, not a business card.
