More Than 500 Bedford Workers Picket GM On Day 2

Last updated on Tuesday, September 25, 2007

(BEDFORD) - Day 2 of the General Motors strike is underway here in Bedford.

More than 500 UAW workers remain on the picket lines until further notice at GM Powertrain, with more than 73,000 strikers nationwide, as union officials and General Motors hash out a new 4 year contract in Detroit.

UAW Local 440 chief Darrell Thimling told WBIW News he feels confident in the ability of negotiators in Detroit to work out an equitable solution.

Workers tell WBIW News they remain optimistic about how things will turn out, though some say they also feel, it's about time the union got after GM.

GM officials, via their website, said they are disappointed the UAW decided to call a work stoppage nationwide. However, UAW president Ron Gettelfinger, via a statement released on the union website, said the union remains ready to resume negotiations, "24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

The strike, so far, has had only a minor effect on GM's stock price, closing down 0.20% to $34.74. Ford Motor Company has not been affected by any peripheral worry yet, moving up a 0.25%. Since Chrysler was taken private by the Cerberus buyout, no stock price is available for them.
