Driver Gets Clipped, Runs Up Chamber Steps

Last updated on Friday, September 21, 2007

A major accident around 9:30 this morning resulted in one woman running her Dodge up the steps of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce building.

Bedford resident Lori Elkins, who works at the hearing center in Towne Square Plaza, across the street from the chamber, told us she saw almost the entire accident.

She said she saw a woman in the blue Dodge Neon come eastbound on 16th street across the intersection of L St.

As she was exiting the intersection, Elkins says she saw a large van clip the rear passenger quarter of the Neon, causing the woman to lose control of the vehicle. Without reportedly being able to slow down, she traveled across the driveway of the Mr. Lubie oil change garage on the south side of the street, narrowly missed a tree in front of the Chamber, ran over a hedge and up the west side stairs of the chamber building.

The car took out the guardrail and struck the front column hard enough to bounce off back down the stairs.

Police have not released names yet. The driver was extricated by fire crews and taken by ambulance. The road was clear shortly before 10:00AM this morning.

More details to come as they become available.
