Lawrence County Council Briefed On Income Tax Switch

Last updated on Wednesday, August 29, 2007

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Council was briefed on the issue of the Local-Option Income Tax last night.

According to information provided by the Association of Indiana Counties, the option would not supplant property taxes altogether as was the initial characterization of the plan, but would provide some relief in exchange for a county income tax.

The council, especially chairman Ross Jean, did not seem too enthused about the idea, stating it seemed more like a way for the state government to pass off the responsibility for its problems to the county governments. Jean equated the move to robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Since the income tax would not have any effect on school property taxes, Bedford resident Tim Dibble doesn't see how the change would benefit the county residents.

Frequent Bedford political participant Sam Shaw expressed concern about county residents even being able to understand the move due to its highly tax-technical language and for people to be able to express their concerns to the council before a decision is made.

Governor Daniels extended the deadline to enact the measure to the end of the year, and the council will hold public meetings to discuss the issue before then.
