(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources wants your help in preserving privately owned forests.

The Division of Forestry this week begins a series of open meetings to discuss a strategic plan to sustain these areas.

Division of Forestry Director John Seifert says 85 percent of Indiana's nearly 4.3 million acres of forestland is privately owned.

The DNR currently provides technical assistance to forestland owners, hoping to prevent development. The state is also willing to fund some woodland improvement projects.

The first session to discuss privately owned forests is Tonight from 6 to 8:00PM inside the Indiana State Museum.

Other meetings are tomorrow night at Potato Creek State Park, and Thursday night inside the Lawrence County Fairgrounds Community Building.
