Second County Sheriff Employee Charged

Last updated on Friday, June 8, 2007

(BEDFORD) - Former Lawrence County Sheriff Kent Hawkins has been officially charged with forging the signatures of other police officers.

Hawkins is also charged with keeping over 100 guns that had been given to his department.

Another Lawrence County Sheriff's Department officer, John Potter, has been charged with forgery. Current Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says Potter signed an affidavit admitting to forging signatures of other officers on weapon "buyback" forms two years ago.

Craig says Hawkins has a warrant for his arrest and police are attempting to serve him the papers.

Potter surrendered yesterday and is free after paying on a $20,000 bond.

Lawrence County Prosecutor Michelle Woodward says she plans to request a special prosecutor to oversee court proceedings.
