Coxton Road Turkey Farm Still Planned

Last updated on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

(BEDFORD) - After a month of long discussions, a decision has finally been made as to whether to have a turkey farm built on a 50 acre plot in the Coxton Road area near Williams.

A group of Coxton Road residents are upset over having 30,000 turkeys raised near their properties. The plot which will be used for a turkey farm is owned by Kyle Hall.

During the bi-monthly meeting of the Lawrence County Commissioners, Hall stated the business would conform to regulations.

Hall said his business would not conform to CAFOs, or concentrated animal feeding operations. He notes his business would conform to AFOs instead. AFOs are types of animal buildings.

Coxton Road spokeswoman Barbara Artinian said whatever the board decided on she would honor. However, she said they would hope for a way to stop the construction of the turkey farm.

Allan Hamilton, also member of the Coxton Road group, says a moratorium would help. Lawrence County Attorney David Smith says Lawrence County could not offer a moratorium since Lawrence county does not have such a law.

In a written statement, board member David Flinn says he was upset with asking Hall to move the buildings further back on the land, but Hall apparently was unwilling to do so.

Following a lack of a motion from the board, Lawrence County Commissioner President Bill Spreen decided to not start any type of regulation or planning. Spreen said this includes all of Lawrence County. Spreen wants to keep the broader county-wide perspective in mind.
