(BEDFORD) - Compensation was the main issue at the Bedford City Council meeting held last night at the Bedford City Hall.
The ordinances discussed addressed overtime pay for firefighters who worked between 204 to 216 hours within a 27 days cycle. A firefighter would earn up to 6 hours of compensatory time and police officers would earn comp time for every hour over a 40 hour week. They would also receive time and a half for their efforts.
Bedford's K-9 police officer was also discussed, offering 7 extra hours each week for the care, feeding and grooming of the city's K-9. This would affect Bedford police officer Mike Johnson with K-9 North.
Board member Patrick Robbins said he didn't think all city employees were aware of the changes and wanted everyone to be informed. Robbins felt that next year's administration should make the final decision. Bedford Mayor Joe Klumpp said they were under a deadline with the Indiana Board of Accounts, but didn't feel pressured to make a vote.
Board President Mark Scherschel said he wanted to conserve the city resources and originally voted against it. Board member Byron Buker said he was in agreement with Robbins and wanted to wait.
Buker then asked for a third and final passage of the ordinance, Robbins seconded the motion. The board voted 4 to 3 to pass the ordinance.
