(BEDFORD) - Former Lawrence County Sheriff Kent Hawkins has turned himself in after an investigation into a purported federal buyback scheme.

60-year-old Hawkins came to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and was charged with two counts of official misconduct and forgery.

Hawkins immediately posted bond and was released. Hawkins recently was hospitalized and was undergoing recovery efforts before turning himself in.

Indiana State Police are heading the investigation and say Hawkins, along with his former training officer John Potter, was allegedly signing federal documents with other officers signatures. Hawkins is also charged with keeping the purchased guns at his home.

Old police weapons may be bought by the officers when they are issued new ones. If these guns are not purchased by the officers, they are supposed to be traded in for credit to the law enforcement agency.

As part of the ongoing investigation, former jail matron Shauna Hawkins has been charged with sexual misconduct.

Lawrence County Prosecutor Michelle Woodward has filed a request for a special prosecutor.

Potter is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on August 8th with the trial to begin September 11th.
