Possible Turkey Farm Angers Residents

Last updated on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

(WILLIAMS) - A group of local residents are up in arms over a possible turkey farm to be built in the Williams area.

Sharon Fox, of Coxton Road, has spearheaded a push to prevent Far Best Farms of Jasper to construct a turkey farm less than 200 feet from the nearest residence.

Spokesman Alan Hamilton says the location of the farm has them upset. Hamilton says issues with a confined animal feeding operations, or CAFO, is a problem.

Barb Artinian says they approached the Lawrence County Council for help. The council told Artinian that they would take the information under advisement.

Artinian says the group is asking for a moratorium so the county commissioners can study the situation. Former IU hydrology geologist professor Noel Krothe has been called in to map out the area to show water run-off into the White River.

The council has also contacted the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. I-DEM suggests letters be sent to them explaining the group's concerns over the turkey farm.

Fox says they are not pursuing this just for their benefit, but for all of Lawrence County. She says Lawrence County has no zoning ordinances which create more problems than solutions.
