Lawrence Co. Commissioners Talk Taxes And Premiums

Last updated on Wednesday, April 4, 2007

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners met in their bi-weekly meeting Tuesday and took care of several items.

Neil Riley, of Sunny Acres Drive, asked the board for a reinstatement of a forgotten tax deduction. Since he lives near the airport a property tax deduction of about 20% had been granted several years ago. The board told Riley they would research the request and send him a letter stating their decision.

Meanwhile, J.D. Powell with J.A. Benefits informed the board that he would be willing to explore options on health insurance to try and find ways to reduce the cost. He would have to ask the current carrier, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, for personal information to be able to compare costs. The board had tried in the past to get the information, but had difficulty from the insurance company.

County Attorney Dave Smith said it was a nightmare to obtain the numbers and called it a "turf wars" and "business positioning" with the insurance company.
