(BEDFORD) - Commercial development threatens the birthplace of international-known artist William T. Wiley in Bedford.

A nearby hospital wants the site to build doctors' offices. Wiley was born in the bungalow located at 1753 - 25th Street in 1937. He and his family moved to California where he became a leader of the Bay Area Funk Movement in San Francisco.

Wiley is known for his unusual assemblage pieces in a variety of mediums. Some of his works are in New York's Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum.

Historic Landmarks of Indiana director Greg Sekula says the structure can be rehabbed for under $50,000. If any one is interested in helping contact Historic Landmarks Foundation.
