(BEDFORD) - The Bedford City Council Meeting, held last night, began with the unanimous third and final passage of pursuing a loan for a new 100-foot ladder fire truck.

The loan will be no larger than $440,000.

Meanwhile, Mark Scherschel was re-elected as the City Council President.

Before the meeting was open to the public, board member Pat Robbins spoke out about a sign written by a resident using a derogatory word. He suggested residents call the individual asking him to take it down.

The meeting was held at the Bedford Chamber of Commerce building to accommodate the expected crowd on the smoking issue. However, about 20 people were there and spoke for and against a smoking ban for the city.

Edna Young, owner of the Smoke Shack in Bedford, presented the board with over 11-hundred more signatures on a petition demanding the board not proceed with a smoking ban. Comments from Tuesday's meeting were mixed on both sides.

Bedford Mayor Joe Klumpp said he didn't think it was up to the government to decide want a business can or cannot do.

The board did not take any action on the issue last night.
