(DENVER, CO) - Senator Evan Bayh may have missed his shot at being Barack Obama’s running mate, but Indiana still got a slice of the democratic national convention spotlight — from an Amtrak machinist.

Mike Fisher of Beech Grove addressed the delegates on the convention's opening night. It's the culmination of an unlikely political journey which began when Barack and Michelle Obama had lunch with Fisher and his wife Cheryl at their home during the Indiana primary campaign.

Fisher says he was leaning toward Obama even before that meeting, but says the face-to-face contact won him over for good. Fisher introduced Obama at an appearance in Lawrence.

Convention planners remembered, and asked him to repeat the testimonial for a national audience, as part of a parade of "ordinary citizen" endorsements.

Fisher expects the beginning of his political career is also the end.

He says he's happy being a family man.
