Thompson To Daniels: Suspend State Gas Tax!

Last updated on Wednesday, July 2, 2008

(UNDATED) - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson is again calling for Governor Mitch Daniels to suspend the state sales tax on gasoline for at least 60 days beginning July 3rd through Labor Day.

She claims without the tax, most people would save $3.50 on a fill-up, enough money to buy a gallon of milk. The temporary suspension would save taxpayers $122 million that would otherwise have gone to the state's general funds.

Long Thompson says it's also possible people would buy more gas, boosting the amount of state highway funding generated from the federal gasoline tax.

She says it's time for Daniels to give Hoosier motorists a break by declaring the energy emergency as Governor O'Bannon did in 2000.

Long Thompson says Indiana is one of only seven states that has a sales tax on gasoline.
