(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The WBIW listening area’s US Congressmen were split on the Medicare bill that wound up passing through both houses of Congress and overriding President George W. Bush’s veto, Tuesday.
House Resolution 6331, which prevents a 10.6% reduction in Medicare payments to healthcare providers such as doctors and clinics, passed the house 383-41 Tuesday, and through the senate 70-26, but saw a split vote between 8th and 9th District Democratic Congressmen Brad Ellsworth and Baron Hill, and 4th and 6th District Republicans Steve Buyer and Mike Pence.
Buyer and Pence were the only Hoosier Congressmen who voted to preserve the President's veto while Hill and Ellsworth voted to override. Both Senators Evan Bayh and Dick Lugar voted for the override as well.
Neither presidential candidate John McCain nor Barack Obama were present for the vote.
This is the 3rd veto President Bush has had overridden during his administration.
