More Than 11,000 Hit Lawrence County Polls

(BEDFORD) - In what many Hoosiers are recognizing as the most watched election in Indiana in 40 years, 11,441 Lawrence County residents showed up to the polls Tuesday to be heard.

During WBIW's Primary Night 2008 program, both Republican Party Chairman Dan Bortner and Democratic Party Chairman recognized the effect the still-undecided Democratic presidential primary had a lot to do with the enlarged turnout.

That was further evidenced by the fact that more than 60% of voters in this Republican-heavy county asked for Democratic ballots.

Both Bortner and Roop were pleased that so many people showed up to the polls Tuesday, even though they may not have asked for their respective party's ticket.

The turnout is further exemplified by the fact that only around 4,000 to 5,000 people hit the polls in last year's municipal elections, which saw new mayors elected in both Bedford and Mitchell, both of those races being hotly contested and closely watched by many.

Now that the general elections are officially underway in Indiana, plenty of work is left to be done by the candidates who won in Tuesday's primaries, even the ones that, currently, are uncontested.

Monday, June 30th is the deadline for Republican, Democratic, Independent and third party officials to fill vacancies in races that didn't include one of their own on the primary ballot.

That means those who are currently uncontested may suddenly have an opponent if the opposing parties elect to place one in an empty spot.
