(UNDATED) - Republicans have now lost five out of six special elections for congressional seats this year, including three in what had been solid GOP territory.

Hoosier Republicans are wondering if it's a signal of a national trend that could damage Indiana candidates this fall.

Polls show a statistical dead heat between Governor Daniels and Democratic nominee Jill Long Thompson. Daniels was unopposed in the primary, but ran a series of ads touting his record in office -- and hasn't stopped.

"Most people are looking at those results and saying any party that wants to be trusted with public service (had) better have some ideas, had better stand for change," Daniels says.

Daniels says Republicans are right to worry about the effect of President Bush's unpopularity, but says it's not something they can control. What they can control, he says, is giving voters a positive reason to vote for their candidates, rather than banking on party loyalty.
