(INDIANAPOLIS) - Nearly 90,000 people have cast ballots for next week’s Indiana primary, far outpacing the total number of absentee votes during the last presidential primary in 2004.
The Indiana Secretary of State's office reports 89,408 people have voted early with their county clerk's office or by mail-in ballots through Monday. Fewer than 57,000 such votes were cast four years ago.
Both the Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton campaigns have been pushing early voting for Tuesday's primary.
The state is not tracking how many of the early votes are in which primary. But State Democratic Chairman Dan Parker says he believes most of them are on the Democratic side because of the interest in the Clinton-Obama race.
