Despite Controversy, Obama Speech Tickets Popular At ND
(SOUTH BEND) - Despite the controversy over his appearance, there is a record demand for tickets among Notre Dame’s faculty members who want to attend the May 17 commencement ceremony featuring President Barack Obama.
According to the South Bend Tribune, university registrar Harold Pace, who is responsible for planning the commencement ceremony and distributing tickets, says he's never seen demand this great in his 17 years on the job.
There's usually room for members of the faculty to attend commencement. But ever since the president was announced as the primary speaker, the demand among Notre Dame professors for tickets has been heavy.
That's forced Pace to establish restrictions. Tickets are available to only regular full-time faculty, which whittles the eligibility for the 400 available seats down to 1,200 people. Several of Notre Dame's colleges are using lotteries to determine which of their faculty members will get a ticket.
Secret Service security measures have also reduced the total amount of seating available for the commencement ceremony.
