(UNDATED) - The nationwide reading celebration known as Read Across America happens annually on or near March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Sponsored by the National Education Association, the program focuses on motivating children to read and helping them to master basic reading skills.

The goal of Read Across America is for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult.

The books of Dr. Seuss, Theodore Geisel, have always sent the message to children that reading is fun and important. As Dr. Suess would've said, "you're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."
